This case study, centered around cult-favorite beauty and skincare brand Glossier, highlights the important role that location plays in shaping your story. Here, I set out to create a sense of being on vacation in a Glossier-filled paradise. Inspired by the color pink (Glossier pink, to be exact), I thought the aquatic blue water would make for a fun play-of-color — and I was right, it did!
Sometimes simplicity is best. I photographed a tube of Glossier's birthday balm dotcom on the concrete found poolside for a minimal product-only shot.
When shooting flatlays, I'm often faced with the dilemma of how much to place within a snap. Crowd a flatlay with too much and it looks overly staged. Do too little and you lose visual interest. An element of simplicity is achieved with flatlay #1 by placing focus on the jarring juxtaposition between the mesmerizing blue pool water and concrete. Throw in a tube of Glossier's balm (and accompanying pink pouch) to emphasize the travel potential of your go-to multipurpose lip balm.
The intent of flatlay #2 is to convey OOO (out-of-office) vibes, hence the corresponding hashtag #hiatus found on a nautical-striped Madewell tank top. Keeping the pink theme going strong, I added in a Glossier pink bubble wrap pouch and a Starbucks birthday cake pop (notice the b-day vibe, anyone?!) for the ultimate pool day.
I utilized the Kirakira+ twinkle-enhancing app to add some IRL sparkle to Glossier's balm dotcom and a styled flatlay. The videos were turned into GIFs for uploading purposes, but they were originally created for Instagram Stories.
